Rider 3 is equipped with automatic light protection circuit, which disengages the power in the event of exposure to intense light. Ease of use: only one button to activate both, the main power and the Infra Red illuminator, fine 2.5x image magnification, lightweight construction, and widely available power source (two AA batteries) make this versatile device indispensable for a widest range of applications. According to the manufacturer, this first generation item typically uses an S-20 photo cathode (with photosensitivity of 180 - 200 mA/Im), electrostatic inversion, and electron acceleration to achieve gain. Consequently, Gen I was the first passive image intensifier. Gen I is characterized by geometric distortion, weak performance at low light levels, and blooming. Expected lifespan is 1500 hours.
