The Centennial of Abner Doubleday's supposed establishment of baseball was celebrated over the 1939 season. Teams from both leagues wore patches to commemorate the history of Americas National Pastime. As the game said goodbye to one of its greatest players in Lou Gehrig, it welcomed one of the best natural hitters in the great Ted Williams. The tall, slender Ted Williams entered his rookie year with the Boston Red Sox in 1939. Williams proved that his ability was indeed splendid as he batted .327 while knocking out 31 home runs and driving in a league-best 145 runs.
