Using psychology to help athletes return to play quickly and successfully

DESCRIPTION

Many of the greatest losses and victories in sport are played out in the battle with injury. An injury does more than undermine an athlete's physical abilities; it also challenges the athlete's emotional equilibrium and mental game. To successfully treat injuries, you must treat the psychological consequences as well as the physical trauma. Psychology of Sp> Chapter 2. Injury from the Athlete's Point of View, Geoff Petrie

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John Heil is a psychologist with the Lewis-Gale Clinic and the coordinator of psychological services for the Lewis-Gale Hospital Pain Center in Roanoke, Virginia. He experienced the problems and frustrations of sport injuries during his college career as a long-distance runner. This personal perspective has motivated him to concentrate on the psychology of sport injuries and helps him balance his professional psychologist's perspective with that of the injured athlete.

Dr. Heil received his doctor of arts degree from Lehigh University in 1982. In 1987, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Pain and Behavioral Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He developed a special counseling program for athletes at Radford University and a behavioral medicine consultation service for athletes at the University of Utah.

Dr. Heil provides psychological services for athletes and coaches through his private practice with Lewis-Gale Clinic and through consultation with the United States Fencing Association, the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, and the Lewis-Gale Foundation's Sports Wellness Committee. He is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology and the American Psychological Association's Division of Exercise and Sport Psychology.

WORDS OF PRAISE

". . . the text represents a comprehensive and in-depth presentation of the psychological aspects of sport injury. The text is very readable and the content will appeal to both the practitioner and researcher. Finally, I was impressed with the amount of "new" information presented that can be immediately employed by members of the sport medicine team to facilitate the rehabilitation process."

Charles J. Hardy, PhD

"I found the book to be very thorough and one that is needed for our field. . . . The author has experienced athletics as an athlete, a coach, and now a sport psychologist. His expertise and that of contributing authors make the text a welcome addition to the literature."
