Gymnastics Fun and Games features ready-to-use games and activities to help elementary and middle school physical educators introduce noncompetitive gymnastics into the curriculum safely and effectively. This well-organized reference includes nearly 50 illustrations to guide physical educators in accurately recreating the activity with their students. It also features safety guidelines from the USA Gymnastics Safety Handbook.

Special features include:

* 13 warm-up and stretching games and activities that are also useful as cool-down exercises

* 29 skill-development activities that focus on jumping and landing, balances and poses, body awareness, and movement

* 9 conditioning and endurance activities for children in upper grades that improve strength, balance, and flexibility

Patty received an SDSU Award for Teaching Excellence in 1996, the USA Gymnastics Award for Service in 1991, and was nominated for the SDSU Teacher of the Year award in 1995 and 1996. She earned her doctorate in physical education pedagogy from the University of Wyoming in 1988.

Eric Malmberg, EdD, is an associate professor of physical education and coordinator of pedagogy at State University of New York College at Cortland. Jim Nance, EdS, is an associate professor of kinesiology and health promotion at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. Like Gymnastics Fun and Games, these books were also designed for use in a school setting.

WORDS OF PRAISE

"While not intended to be a comprehensive book of gymnastics, this book will provide teachers in both public and private settings with a meaningful supplement. For those whose background is in Olympic or competitive gymnastics and who are searching for a more developmentally appropriate model, this book presents gymnastics in a noncompetitive, fun atmosphere that is also challenging and skill oriented."

Peter Werner, PED

University of South Carolina

"Gymnastics Fun and Games is a welcome addition to the resources available to physical education teachers. It emphasizes the benefits and fun of introducing students to gymnastics activities. The authors have compiled a treasury of gymnastics games and activities. I appreciate their attention to gymnastics safety: Gymnastics Fun and Games addresses general safety concerns head-on by providing physical educators with easy-to- follow instructions, illustrations of gymnastics activities, and good safety tips."

Steve Whitlock

Director of Safety and Education
USA Gymnastics
