An exploration of the psychological side of cardiac rehab Coping With Heart Illness is a series of three videotapes that examine the psychological side of cardiac rehabilitation. Hosted by Dr. Wayne Sotile, director of psychological services for the Wake Forest University Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, these videos not only educate patients on the psychosocial aspects of living with heart illness but also stimulate discussion about relevant issues. The tapes' unique format a combination of case examples, review segments, and discussion questions makes Coping With Heart Illness an indispensable resource for physicians and patients alike. The videos explore three broad areas of interest patient issues, couple issues, and family issues and each tape presents three vignettes related to those issues. The vignettes, which take place in an office setting, feature a clinician-patient consultation focusing on a single aspect of rehabilitation. Specific issues addressed in these vignettes include how to identify and cope with depression,
how to manage emotions,
the experiences of heart patient spouses,
the sexual fears and concerns of heart patients,
the importance of family teamwork in making lifestyle changes,
how to talk about heart illness with children and grandchildren, and
the importance of social support.
Following each vignette, Dr. Sotile reviews its main points plus additional related points. Graphics help to highlight the most important information. The review segments conclude with questions designed to elicit discussion in the clinical session.
