Understanding Leadership Styles presents a primer on leadership and various approaches taken in its study (e.g., traits, functional, situational, and work styles). The primary focus of the DVD is on the diversity of work styles that individuals employ and encounter in their dealings with people, and the advantages and disadvantages of each work style. A Native American medicine wheel or "leadership compass" approach is utilized, and the question of "which style is best?" is addressed in the context of situation, team-development stage, and overall effectiveness. The point is reinforced that the better individuals can develop an understanding of their own dominant style(s) and the styles of those with whom they interact, the more effective they can be in their work and relationships. Among the topics covered: definitions of leadership, approaches to the study of leadership, work styles (East, South, West, and North), advantages and disadvantages of different styles, situational leadership, stages of team development, which leadership approach or style is best?, considerations in adopting or developing a leadership style.
