John Mackey was the premiere tight end in the history of the National Football League and as president of the National Football league's Player's Association, the first black man to lead a high-profile labor union.
Blazing Trails is the story of John Mackey, told in his own words. He played on the legendary Colts teams that included Johnny Unitas and Raymond Berry. Mackey became a perennial All-Pro, with his 6'2", 224 pound body and wide receiver speed, and caught a 75 yard touchdown pass from Johnny Unitas to lead the Colts to victory in Super Bowl V. He was named as the greatest tight end in the history of the NFL in 1970.
One of the founders of the NFL players union, Mackey organized the first players strike and sued the NFL over the so-called Rozelle Rule, which prevented players from seeking successful free agency.
In taking stock of the people who have made an impact in their respective fields, it is easy to see that John Mackey's influence is still being felt today.
