Dennis Graver, an internationally acclaimed scuba diving educator, outlines everything today's divers need to know for underwater adventures. Whether you're a beginner who wants to learn to scuba dive, a certified diver looking for a refresher course, or a dive instructor searching for the perfect training manual, Scuba Diving (Second Edition) will teach you how to:
  • perform essential diving skills such as preparing your equipment, demonstrating hand signals, and using the buddy system;
  • take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe dive;
  • optimize your equipment for both warm and cold water destinations;
  • protect the underwater environment; and
  • take advantage of the latest advances in dive calculators and computers.

Providing more than just expert instruction, Graver draws on his personal diving experiences to share special insights into scuba. In each "Scuba Wise" section, he explains how to adapt to the underwater environment, prevent potential injuries, identify and appreciate the wonderful plant and animal sea life, achieve an adequate fitness level for diving, and more. And to better instruct divers, Graver includes "Dive In and Discover" segments at the beginning of each chapter. From explaining how to test and control buoyancy to listing the four methods of heat loss, readers will learn the key concepts they should master before continuing on in the book.

This beautifully illustrated, full-color text will help you imagine many of the unforgettable experiences awaiting you in this wondrous new world. Whether it's diving weightless in clear water in a forest of underwater plants or viewing the incredible life forms swimming through the sea, Scuba Diving will leave you yearning to experience the emotions and sensations for yourself.

About the Author

With over a quarter-century of experience as a scuba instructor and instructor trainer, Dennis Graver has authored 27 books and manuals on the subject of scuba diving. In his position as director of training for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), he designed the PADI modular scuba course and wrote the PADI Dive Manual, which revolutionized scuba instruction. During his tenure as director of education for the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), Graver wrote the NAUI Open water I Scuba Diver Course Instructor Guide. He has also contributed hundreds of articles on diving in such magazines as Skin Diver, Sources, and Undercurrents, as well as several NAUI technical publications.

From the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt to the barrier reefs of Australia, Graver also has spent the past 30 years photographing the wonders under the water. He has won numerous awards from the Underwater Photographic Society, and his photos have graced the covers of many magazines and illustrated several diving texts and audiovisual education programs.

In addition Graver has greatly influenced scuba diving with his development of a dive table multilevel diving technique for recreational diving and a breathing mask technique for diving rescue. He also has designed the NAUI Dive Time Calculator and the first PADI dive tables.

Graver is currently a member of NAUI, the Handicapped Scuba Association, the Undersea Hyperbaric and Medical Society, the Diver's Alert Network, the Underwater Photographic Society, and the Underwater Society of America. Dennis and his wife Barbara reside in Camano Island, Washington.
